Building the common good

TocH transforming lives and communities

Our purpose

Toc H has been transforming lives and communities for over 100 years, our origins are in the trenches of the First World War and soldiers coming home to create a better world.  Transforming lives and communities remains our purpose today we work with local people to create thriving and safe communities where people can grow, proper and build the resilience they need to flourish and live a good life.

TocH Our Mission Joan & Jan

Why the common good?

A common good approach works for a shared life in a society in which everyone can flourish.  It values mutuality in relationships, fairness in dialogue and equal access to resources, as well as recognising the obligation on all of us to contribute to the good where we can. We want to see stable family life (whatever shape it might take), good schools, affordable nourishment and good quality healthcare, as well as safe, fair and ecologically sustainable communities. We work to understand the fractures  in society and in our work we aim  to heal  divides.

What we do

Our local hubs are based  in local neighbourhoods. They have  three main elements: to provide services with and for local people, to advocate for the resources necessary to provide local wellbeing and to build personal and organisational capacity in their neighbourhood. Our national team supports that work with Finance, HR, Fundraising and Project Management support. In practical terms this means that at the centre of our organisation are local management groups immersed in their neighbourhoods  and committed to building the common good. This typically means work with young people (our boxing  clubs for example build confidence and provide exercise), work with young families providing safe spaces (creating local interaction and participation) work with older people in craft sessions food clubs as well as a host of other activities. But we engage with whatever local people believe needs to be addressed.
