Tackling Loneliness and Building Connections

Loneliness is one of the greatest challenges facing many communities. It affects people of all ages, but older people are often particularly vulnerable as families move away, friendships diminish and opportunities for regular social contact become fewer. At Toc H, we believe that the answer to loneliness is not simply providing activities, but building relationships. Our aim is to create places where people are known, valued and connected to others through genuine friendship and shared purpose.

Across our local projects we bring people together through community cafés, creative activities, gardening, volunteering, meals, social groups and practical support. These activities matter not because they fill time, but because they create opportunities for trust, belonging and mutual care to grow.

An important part of our work is what we think of as generational repair. We believe that communities are strongest when different generations know one another, learn from one another and share life together. Children benefit from the wisdom, encouragement and stability that older people can offer. Older people, in turn, discover renewed purpose, energy and hope through relationships with younger generations. Rather than seeing people as recipients of care, we seek to recognise the gifts that everyone brings. Older people have experience, skills and stories that enrich community life. Young people bring creativity, enthusiasm and fresh perspectives. When generations come together, communities become stronger, more resilient and more connected.

We work alongside local organisations, churches, health services and community groups to create welcoming places where no one has to face life alone. By strengthening relationships across generations, we are helping to build communities in which people of every age can belong, contribute and flourish.

We have this work underway in Pilgwenly, Eveswell High Brooms and under development in Thornbury.
