Mill Hill

Over the years Mill Hill Branch of Toc H has been involved with many acts of social justice and care in the community. Regular meetings took place with members of the Branch to discern the needs of the local community and to discuss ways of implementing the appropriate action. Social works included distributing food and other necessities to those in need. There was a thriving Film Club when recent films were shown in hospital wards and care homes. Money was raised for social outreach at events including the annual Toc H fete at Belmont School in Mill Hill, a book stall on Mill Hill Broadway and through the very active Mill Hill Toc H Celebrity Music Concerts with many distinguished musicians taking part including Yehudi Menuhin, Alfred Brendel, James Galway and guitarists Segovia, Julian Bream and John Williams.
We are now a small group who maintain the ethos of Toc H showing concern for those in the community and following the four points of the compass – to love widely; to build bravely; to think fairly; to witness humbly.
We meet up with friends who have Toc H connections to take part in events such as attending classical concerts at Henrietta Barnett School in Hampstead Garden Suburb organised by Mill Hill Music Club, started by Mill Hill Toc H in 1955. Other joint events include the Toc H World Chain of Light in December each year. We take part in the annual Toc H Christmas Carol Service at All Hallows by the Tower Church in London and also follow the tradition of laying a wreath at the War Memorial in The Ridgeway Mill Hill on Remembrance Sunday each year in November.
Mill Hill Branch also supports Toc H Weirside, a cottage located at Chapel Stile in the Langdale Valley in the Lake District. The cottage provides accommodation for 20 people on a self-catering basis and is particularly suitable for charities or community groups.
Some of our members help at the Community Garden at St John’s United Reformed Church New Barnet and use the regular group meetings to share the message of Toc H. The Community Garden is open to all with some produce grown in the garden provided for the Chipping Barnet Food Bank.
We enjoy fellowship together and are always open to ideas for new projects and ways of sharing the message of Toc H. The Toc H lamp is the symbol of the journey of discovery and the light never goes out.
