Our provision for young families in Pillgwenlly, South Wales was developed in response to extensive conversations with area residents and the findings of a 2023 report (https://www.pillconnects.com/) from Play Wales, which found a severe and enduring ‘play deficit’ in Pillgwenlly. Our work with young families is holistic, child-led and play-rich, providing environments in which children are free to explore the world around them and enjoy new sensory, cognitive and social experiences at their own pace. Working this way, children lead in their own emotional, social and cognitive development.

In Pillgwenlly we support approximately 200 families per year. Many families access more than one service, enabling us to provide holistic, long-term support that walks alongside families through the early years.
Around 90% of our service users here live in Pillgwenlly, one of the most deprived areas in Wales. Research shows that socioeconomic deprivation of this severity in early childhood is linked with poorer social, emotional and physical development outcomes. Our programme of support for families in Pillgwenlly works to reduce the impact of deprivation, giving every child a fairer start in life.
